PUSPEN, institution that gives addicts a second chance

PADANG BESAR, May 29, 2023 – The Ministry of Home Affairs (MOHA) intends to make the Narcotic Addiction Rehabilitation Center (PUSPEN) under the supervision of the National Anti-Drugs Agency (NADA) able to become an institution that can provide opportunities to individuals who had the misfortune with drug addiction.

Minister of MOHA, YB Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said, the effort is to provide a treatment and rehabilitation program based on the AADK i-Pulih Model involving intellect, spiritual and physical aspects.

He said, the modules and syllabus taught at PUSPEN are carefully arranged to enable the client to be exposed to knowledge in the fields of spirituality, self-management, health and vocational skills.

“MOHAโ€™s desire to make PUSPEN an institution that can provide second chances for an individual who has slipped into the drug scene to get a second chance by following the rehabilitation process based on the AADK i-Pulih Model involving mental, spiritual and physical aspects.

“God willing, when these PUSPEN clients leave the facility, they will be able to study and read the Quran, gain knowledge on Fardu Ain, have health and medical knowledge, vocational skills and know the good and bad effects of drug abuse,” he said when speaking in conjunction with the Opening Ceremony of PUSPEN Bukit Chabang, here on monday.

Moreover, YB Saifuddin Nasution said that families whose members are in PUSPEN need to show full support as well as encouragement by family members to those who are studying at the center.

“PUSPEN should be considered an education center that will produce graduates who will not only recover from drug addiction problems, but will also become productive individuals for their families and communities,” he said.

He added, for every 100 NADA clients, 71 people have successfully recovered from drug addiction problems in 2022.

“During my first working visit to NADA, I have determined that the percentage of the recovery rate be increased to 75 percent within the year 2023.

“Although the percentage rate is high, with the recovery model that is constantly being improved, I am confident if God willing, that NADA will be able to achieve it,” he said.

Earlier, the Regent of Perlis Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail agreed and complete the Inauguration Ceremony of PUSPEN Bukit Chabang.

Also present was the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Datuk Seri Dr. Shamsul Anuar Nasarah, Director General of NADA, Sutekno Ahmad Belon and Minister of Perlis, Tuan Mohd Shukri Ramli.
